CENTRE
FOR EXTENSION EDUCATION
The student community is a vast reservoir of human energy
waiting to be harnessed for useful purposes. Only they need opportunities,
which will capture and arrest their imagination, tap their power, unlock
their talents and develop their potential. Their youth and vigor should
be utilized fully in the process of modernizing the traditional rural
society through the transfer of science and technology. This would be
possible only when education is related to the solution of their personal
and community problems, and a close association between the curricula,
college and the community is established.
Keeping this view in mind, Radhamadhab College, Silchar
has established Extension Education Centre in 2002 with the aim to involve
the students in nation-building activities and for optimum utilization of
education for the welfare of the society. The mission of the centre is to
devote its energy and resources in the social development of the country
by way of social services: to make the community conscious of the
scientific development and to develop scientific outlook in the various
aspects of daily life of the people of the community. In consonance with
its mission, the Centre for Extension Education of Radhamadhab College has
undertaken various programmes and activities for the just after its
establishment. In January 2003, the centre organized an awareness
programme on “Health & Sanitation” at nearby slum area and submitted a
report to the district administration about health and sanitary condition
of that area. A workshop was organized on the month of August 2003 by the
Centre on First-Aid knowledge to train the students of the college for the
purpose of extending First-Aid knowledge to the people in a meaningful
way. As per recommendation of the NAAC Peer Team and to achieve its goal,
the Centre for Extension Education has adopted a village with the aim of
uplifting the community life of the people, specially helping the women
folk of the village for their empowerment in literacy and self-employment.
After the adoption, the student members of the centre started imparting
education to the rural womenfolk and provided them training on
doll-making, decorative pot-making, jute-bag making, cutting, knitting and
tailoring etc. The centre organized an exhibition-cum-sale of the products
made by the womenfolk of the village in December 2005, to bring the
villagers to the forefront, so that they can get an extra-exposure of
their self-confidence about their products. As the village has been
adopted for five years, the centre is continuing its activities in the
village to achieve its desired goal.
